36 Seconds: Portrait of a Hate Crime w/ live Q&A broadcast
This screening event will be followed by a live Q&A session with honored friends of the victims, Haytham and Omar.
We thank them from the bottom of our hearts to be here with us in discussing their personal experience through this tragedy, and the importance of recognizing hate crimes and combatting racial injustice.
About the Film:
On February 10th, 2015, it took Craig Hicks 36 seconds to extinguish the lives of three young, Muslim Americans: Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha, and Razan Abu-Salha. Before they can grieve, the families are forced to become activists to set the record straight about the murders.
This film documents the aftermath of the 2015 execution of three Muslim-American students in Chapel Hill, following their families' journey from heartbreak to activism as they fight to ensure the murders are recognized as a hate crime and call for systemic change.
"36 Seconds: Portrait of a Hate Crime" has received widespread recognition and accolades, including the DOC NYC Film Festival's Subject Matter Award, the CAAMfest Documentary Audience Award, and the Swedish Academy Award for Best Documentary. We’ve also been honored as an official selection at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and won awards at the Dubai International Cine Carnival, Arab Film Festival, and Worldfest - Houston International Film Festival.

About the film
On February 10th, 2015, it took Craig Hicks 36 seconds to extinguish the lives of three young, Muslim Americans in their home in Chapel Hill, NC. Before they can grieve, the families are forced to become activists to set the record straight about the murders.
The film charts the victims’ families’ agonizing overnight pivot from trauma to advocacy as they struggle to prevent their loved ones’ deaths from being dismissed as the result of a random parking dispute. They courageously speak the truth about the hate crime that has destroyed their lives, about the overt and insidious ways racism plays out in our society and about the need to reform a hate crime system that is broken. This is a project about grace and the will to fight for the truth in the worst of circumstances.
