About the event
Join us for a live online screening of A Dairy Story, followed by a Q&A with David Finlay, the farmer at the heart of the film. This month marks some important milestones for the farm, including the tenth anniversary of the introduction of a cow-with-calf system across the herd.
This screening is for anyone thinking about hosting a community screening in their community centre, film club, shop, church or farm. This is an opportunity to watch the film, then put your questions to David, and hear how other hosts are planning their evenings.
You don’t need to be organising a screening to join us. Everyone is welcome to join this watch party, but we do want to mention that part of the conversation afterwards will be about community screenings.
This is a live event.
The film (78 minutes) starts automatically at 6pm UK time on Thursday 19 November, and the live Q&A with David follows straight after, running for around 40 minutes to an hour, or for as long as the conversation flows.

This is our first live event on Kinema. We've done a lot of research and think this platform is going to be the best way to share the film with people around the world. We’ll be learning as we go, so thank you in advance for your patience if there are a few rough edges on the night.
Tickets
Tickets are $20, about £15. Kinema, the screening platform, charges in US dollars, so your bank will convert the price for you. If you’d like to give a little more to help the film reach new people, you can choose to pay up to $50.
As a thank you to future hosts
Everyone who books a ticket will receive a $20 discount code to use against a community screening licence for A Dairy Story, booked within one month of the watch party. We’ll share it during the Q&A and by email afterwards, so when you book, please tick the box to share your email with us.
Community screenings are currently open in the UK and Ireland only. If you’re joining us from elsewhere, we’ll send you a separate code early next year, ahead of our international screening day on 7 March 2027, which is Mother's Day in the UK.
FAQ
Can I watch with my family?
Yes. One ticket covers one screen, so everyone watching together on that screen is welcome.
Can I watch on my TV?
Yes, using AirPlay, Chromecast or an HDMI cable from your laptop. Screen mirroring doesn’t work, because of copy protection on the film.
What if I can’t make 6pm?
This is a live event, and the Q&A with David isn’t recorded, so please join us on the night if you can. If you’re in a time zone where 6pm UK doesn’t work, sign up to our newsletter and we’ll let you know about future screenings. We are planning to have additional events to suit different time zones.
Do I need to be planning a community screening to join?
Not at all. Everyone is welcome.
Does the film contain any distressing scenes?
A Dairy Story is rated PG, and there are no scenes of animals being harmed. It’s a gentle film, but there are some emotional moments. Most people find it moving rather than upsetting.
How do I get the $20 discount code?
We’ll share it during the Q&A and by email afterwards. To receive the email, please remember to tick the box to share your email with us when you book.
Can I share the link with friends?
Your viewing link is just for you, but we’d love you to share this event page so they can book their own ticket.

What people have said about A Dairy Story
“The daily reunion of cows and calves portrayed in this beautiful film was one of the most emotional pieces of documentary I have ever seen.”
Professor Christine Nicol MA, DPhil, Professor of Animal Welfare, Royal Veterinary College
"I have huge admiration for people who are prepared to challenge convention, think differently and put their ideas into practice, because progress starts with asking whether there might be a better way. I’d urge everyone to watch this fascinating film."
James Greenwood, Vet and TV presenter

About the film
Every day, thousands of dairy calves are separated from their mothers at birth. A Dairy Story follows a husband-and-wife team as they risk everything to prove there’s another way.
At Rainton Farm in south-west Scotland, David and Wilma Finlay abandon conventional methods and build the first farm in Europe to make a cow-with-calf dairy system commercially viable.
This is a story about the bonds that matter most. What begins as a question of animal welfare opens into climate, environment, and ultimately something far more personal: a story about change, about trusting nature, and about the time we have together.
A Dairy Story shows how changing a farming system changes everything; from the lives of the animals to the wellbeing of the farmers, and perhaps even the future of dairy farming itself.
