About the event
Southern Documentary Fund (SDF) champions Southern documentary makers and stories. Inspired by our belief in the power of media to change lives, we provide documentarians with resources, including grants, fiscal sponsorship, and mentorship–all to promote Southern stories and lower barriers for documentary makers and underrepresented voices.
This live event will be followed by a conversation with LA ORQUESTA filmmakers Monica Villavicencio and Stephanie Liu + SDF Artistic Director Christopher Everett. This program is made possible through the National Endowment for the Arts.

About the film
A sought-after music teacher and conductor, Juana Alzaga sets out to create Georgia’s first youth orchestra for immigrant families. For most, this is their only opportunity for music education. La Orquesta follows Juana and her orchestra over the course of one school year as they navigate health challenges and increasing hostility toward immigrants, finding solace in music.
