MADRE Speaks: Stories of Pride presents "Rafiki"
Directed by Wanuri Kahiu, “Rafiki” is a love story set in Kenya that follows two teenage girls and their evolving relationship.
Upon its release, the film faced barriers when the Kenya Film Classification Board classified “Rafiki” as “restricted” because of its depiction of lesbian relationships. The board believed that the film promoted homosexuality, posed a threat to children, and “undermined the sensibilities of Kenyans.”
In January 2026, after eight long years, the Kenyan Court of Appeals ruled that the 2018 ban was unlawful.
LGBTQIA+ identities are criminalized in Kenya, facing up to fourteen years’ imprisonment. In addition, LGBTQIA+-identified and gender non-conforming communities are continuously at risk of violence and discrimination as a growing number of countries adopt homophobic legislation, much like Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act.
Alongside our global partners, MADRE is actively working to ensure the safety and protection of LGBTQIA+ communities worldwide. From addressing gender gaps in a draft Crimes Against Humanity Treaty to ensure women and LGBTQIA+ people of all genders are no longer sidelined from justice, to providing digital security training and community workshops on environmental and gender justice, MADRE firmly believes in inclusive, holistic responses to achieve lasting change for all.
Through our MADRE Speaks: Stories of Pride campaign, we are amplifying the voices of those who are unable to speak out or express themselves out of fear of violence.
LGBTQIA+ communities reserve the right to safety. For over 40 years, MADRE has connected with organizations, activists, funders, artists, and more to create lasting change, supported by members who believe in grassroots activism and solutions. Not only are we able to share these stories because of a global network of support, but also because we’re privileged to create deep relationships of trust with our partners.
