During the two years before Bruce Lee’s tragic death, the legendary martial artist made four feature films in Hong Kong. Bao Nguyen’s intimate documentary takes special focus in this prolific period, using archival footage and interviews with Lee’s family and friends to shine light on his remarkable legacy, as well as his struggle for visibility in America.
About the film
In 1971, after being rejected by Hollywood, Bruce Lee returned to his parents’ homeland of Hong Kong to complete four iconic films. Charting his struggles between two worlds, this intimate and timely portrait explores questions of identity and representation through the use of rare archival, interviews with loved ones and Bruce’s own writings. Be Water is an official Sundance Film Festival selection. “An unexpectedly urgent film (GQ).”
