About the film
Mayonaka is a dark drama about two lonely strangers set against Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station — the busiest train station in the world. Kumi is an aspiring young singer living as a cyber-homeless out of a 24 hour internet cafe. Depressed and without hope, she’s fixated her happiness on the idea of either losing her virginity or killing herself on her birthday night. Meanwhile, Akira is an overworked and miserable salaryman who’s decided to quit his job but is obsessed with confronting his boss whom he feels is the source of his humiliation. Absent from home for months and his wife threatening divoice, he must also decide to go home by the last train. In a chance meeting, Kumi and Akira meet in Shinjuku Station and make an intimate and emotional journey together to the end of midnight.
