About the event
Just in time for garden and leaf clean-up, Rafford Village Hall is pleased to present this free matinee screening of Six Inches of Soil together with a soil "show and sow" exhibition with three seasoned soil and composting experts. Complimentary refreshments and a garden-themed raffle will be included in the event.
These are the local composting experts who will have soil samples to show and discuss after the film:
Pam Rodway of Wester Lawrenceton Farm
"My subject is food, which concerns everyone; it is health, which concerns everyone; it is the soil, which concerns everyone - even if they do not realise it." ~Lady Eve Balfour, author of The Living Soil This is the principle by which Pam has lived her adult life, working with the land and the living community it supports, with her late husband Nick Rodway. Pam will share about a project Nick initiated to eliminate peat and plastic from seedling production for small-scale organic growers, which continues through the Grow Blocks project as part of the Soil Association Innovative Farmers Network.
Rob Parkinson
Rob was formerly a Soil and Environmental Science lecturer at Seale-Hayne Agricultural College, Devon, then Plymouth University, teaching and carrying out research into the environmental impact of land use practices. Rob worked mostly on soil and nutrient management in agricultural systems, including composting and manure management. Latterly his interested extended to perceptions of soil health and soil ecology in semi-natural as well as managed systems.
Adrian MuscuttAdrian tends a productive no-dig organic fruit and vegetable garden that is largely reliant on home-made compost, maximising use of local resources in a relentless quest for the perfect mulch.
This event is part of our Rafford's Growing Roots project, aimed at inspiring community connections around our historical and contemporary roots in Rafford's rich soil. We are offering it for free in partnership with Film Forres Mobile, thanks to UK Shared Prosperity Funding from the UK Government and Moray Council.
