About the event
Hills for Peace and Justice stands with groups and individuals all over the world in solidarity with Palestinian people. We believe that the institution of war itself, not just the war of the day, should be abolished. We acknowledge the war crimes committed by Hamas on October 7th, but we have formed to bear witness to and condemn the genocidal violence of the state of Israel against people in Gaza, the bombings and forced expulsions of Palestinians in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, and the escalation of violence in Lebanon and the whole region. We provide education regarding the complex history of the region through films, discussions, and other solidarity events. We are inclusive and stand with Jewish people all over the world who similarly condemn genocide. We believe in ending the occupation, stopping the genocide, an embargo on the arms trade with Israel, a permanent cease fire, and a just peace. We invite our community to join us in a weekly vigil for peace. Weekly letters emanate from this vigil to elected officials of the Canadian government.
About the film
Where Olive Trees Weep offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss, trauma, and the quest for justice. We follow, among others, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. We witness Dr. Gabor Maté offering trauma-healing work for a group of women who have been tortured in Israeli prisons. Ancient landscapes bear deep scars, having witnessed the brutal reality of ancestral land confiscation, expulsions, imprisonment, home demolitions, water deprivation, and denial of basic human rights. Yet, through the veil of oppression, we catch a glimpse of resilience—deep roots that have carried the Palestinian people through decades of darkness and shattered lives. This emotional journey bares the humanity of the oppressed while grappling with the question: what makes the oppressor so ruthlessly blind to its own cruelty?
