About the film

Amma’s Pride is an award-winning short documentary that chronicles Valli’s unwavering support for her trans daughter, Srija, as she navigates the trials and tribulations of falling in love, getting married, and fighting for state recognition of her marriage in a traditional small town in South India. When societal pressures push Srija’s marriage to the edge, Valli clings to the hope of a miracle.

What people are saying

The synergy between the filmmaker and subject is palpable, reflecting a deep investment of time and care. The film strikes a remarkable balance between exploring serious issues like trans violence while celebrating trans joy, offering a refreshing departure from the typical tragic endings often associated with trans stories. It illustrates that a single moment can spark a significant change, creating a powerful movement.

Tamil Nadu’s first legally-registered trans marriage takes center stage in director Shiva Krish’s documentary short “Amma’s Pride,” the sole LGBTQ+ selection at this year’s International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

Naman Ramachandran

Variety

She isn’t an activist fighting inner prejudice, nor a character grappling with societal expectations. She’s simply a mother, her heart beating instinctively for her child. Isn’t that, after all, the truest antidote to systemic hate—the simple, unshakeable love of a parent?

Sudhir Srinivasan

The New Indian Express

For its tender, complex portrayal of identity and family in a story about what it means to love and be loved in a fractured world.
