About the film

In the dense forests of the Eastern Himalayas, moths are whispering something to us. In the dark of night, two curious observers shine a light on this mesmerizing universe. Together, a female scientist and a young man from the indigenous Bugun community are on an expedition to decode these nocturnal creatures in a remote ecological “hot spot” in northeast India. The result is a deeply immersive film that draws us in, urging us to look more closely at our connections with the natural world.

Erin Lewis

UPR

The film acknowledges science and the scientists but eventually makes them a conduit for the viewer to experience the many mysteries of nature and value and appreciate it for the gift that it is for humanity.

Namrata Joshi

The Cinema Express

A gently mesmeric documentary explores these enigmatic insects and the people who study them.

Danny Leigh

Financial Times

Dutta and Srinivasan’s understated approach shows research and nature in action without pretending to make a forest give up its secrets.

Nic Rapold

The New York Times

Nocturnes’ confounding combination of concern and tranquility sprouts surprising feelings of hope – and in the wake of this hope, motivation. The world may be ending, but Nocturnes provides one more beautiful reason why our efforts matter. Insignificant as we may think moths to be, their longevity reflects ours.
