About the film
THE LONG WAY HOME, is Michael Apted’s rollicking, revealing documentary about Soviet underground rock star Boris Grebenshchikov’s odyssey to the West to make an album and bring it back home in the early, optimistic days of glasnost. It also features Boris’s renowned band, Aquarium, and Dave Stewart, with special appearances by Annie Lennox, Chrissie Hynde, Ray Cooper, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Remastered in 4K and available for the first time in over 30 years, it is followed by an epilogue directed by Steven Lawrence and Susanne Rostock that brings Boris’s journey up to date, including his exile from Russia for speaking out against the invasion of Ukraine.
Paying the suggested price or the $14.99 tier will support further distribution of the remastered and updated film, a labor of love funded by donations. We have also included a $4.99 tier to make the film accessible to fans of Boris Grebenshchikov who may have financial hardship, including those affected by the war in Ukraine.

What people are saying
‘Important. The film captures a fleeting moment when borders felt permeable and cultural exchange seemed capable of rewriting futures.‘
Chris Jones
‘No glasnost time capsule. True to his aesthetic as the maker of the observational, character driven Up Series, Apted largely backgrounds the geopolitical in favor a portrait of an artist uneasily straddling musical and cultural worlds, uncertain how closely to cling to his past as a previously unimaginable future opens up before him.‘
Andy Markowitz
‘Apted set out to make a film documenting Grebenshchikov’s attempt to break borders, and he succeeded.‘
William Schwartz
‘A loving restoration that pays tribute to the film’s late director and the importance of its central figure.‘
Daniel Eng
‘Like Columbus, who sailed for India but discovered America, BG, through foreign lands, re-discovers both his homeland and himself ...A unique film about the difficulties of translation, genius and Slavophilism, talent and idol worshipers, shattered hopes and unkept promises. Hurry to see it. This is pure epiphany.‘
