About the film

TOITŪ: Visual Sovereignty, the debut directorial feature from Academy Award nominated producer Chelsea Winstanley, goes behind the scenes of the largest Māori art exhibition in Aotearoa New Zealand’s history. Following curator Nigel Borell’s vision, the film captures both its record-breaking success and the conflicts that arise when Indigenous sovereignty challenges institutional power. Featuring rare access and the voices of celebrated artists such as Taika Waititi and Venice Biennale winners the Mataaho Collective, this is a powerful portrait of cultural resilience and authorship.

What people are saying

““This is an intelligently and sensitively made film. The ideas and issues that it raises and examines are essential ones, and TOITŪ: Visual Sovereignty is a thoughtful, and extraordinarily beautiful, addition to the conversation. I loved this film, and I reckon it will reward a couple of viewings.” “But TOITŪ: Visual Sovereignty is not just a film about an exhibition. At the heart of the film is an ongoing discussion about the ownership - the sovereignty - of the individual pieces and the collection as a whole. About who has the right to speak on the artist's - and the art's - behalf. And about who will hold the pen that records the history of this moment.””

Graeme Tuckett

Sunday Star Times

““This is primarily an important cine document of a whole lot of amazing art in a way that will allow it to go further than it might otherwise have.””

Dominic Corry

Radio NZ

““Expect a rich, authentic visual treat which is the world of Māori arts including a surprising political thread exploring the challenges with being indigenous in Pākeha establishments. This story of sovereignty was in safe hands with Chelsea Winstanley.” ■ “rich, authentic visual treat” ■ “a surprising political thread” “It's an incredible documentary and I think people are going to really appreciate it.””

Mihingarangi Forbes

Radio NZ - Saturday Morning

““The film, also commissioned by the gallery, provides an enriching context for the exhibition that will make viewers wish for a chance to see the art again with it all in mind.” ● “A day after the premiere, the friends I went with were still exchanging messages about what it meant. Perhaps that’s what teachable moments are meant to do.””
