About the film
A groundbreaking feature-length documentary challenging the way we understand mental health. Traumality, created by filmmaker Ton Mazzone, explores the growing evidence linking childhood trauma and adversity to many of the mental health diagnoses seen today. Through world-leading experts, lived experience and emerging science, it examines why our mental health system remains rooted in a medical model, what a trauma-informed approach could look like and what it might take to create a society that understands people not simply by what's wrong with them, but by what's happened to them.
Featuring Dr Peter Levine, Dr Richard Schwartz, Dr Janina Fisher, Deb Dana, Dr Jessica Taylor, Dr Suzanne Zeedyk, Sophie Olson, Dr Graham Music, Mandy Saligari, Dr Eugene Ellis, Benjamin Fry, Dr Asha Patel, Dr Susanna Petche, Dr Veronique Mead, Dr Angela Kennedy, Benna Waites, Lou Lebentz, Julie Harmieson, Jason Leitch, Deborah Cooper Jones and Joe Tudor.

“This documentary takes the conversations heard in Wisdom of Trauma and Resilience to the next stage. It has the potental if seen widely by communities across the world to help shift a moribond mental health interventions model towards a new trauma responsive paradigm which potentially could impact everything. Should be on Netflix now - bravo.”

“So, so good at its.analysis and so, so good at opening a door to healing. This requires follow up. But first, it must be watched by millions. This is not about money, it's about creating a better future with all of humanity. Motivated not by survival, not my money, not by fear, not by tribalism, but motivated by the sovereignty of Good.”

“Ton has created something remarkable in this film. I am a counsellor and and found it insightful, thought provoking, compassionate and validating. Most of us are touched by trauma at some points in our lives and the knowledge we could benefit from is clearly laid out in thoughtful context in this film. It's a gift to Counsellors and their clients alike. The style of the film beautifully exemplifies too, how trauma in a therapeutic session often feels. Raw, emotional, not overly edited and real. So good. Colin.”

“This is a powerful piece, it starts with us as whole human not a collection of symptoms. Describing how the impact of what happened to us causes lifelong deep impact and it describes how understanding this can help us change our lives. The significance of the need to become trauma informed to improve services for children and adults is powerfully demonstrated.”

“TRAUMALITY is a powerful and thought-provoking film that highlights why understanding trauma is not just a clinical issue, but a matter of human rights, public protection and social justice. As someone who is care experienced and now studies law, I found its message particularly relevant. The film challenges us to consider how systems respond to vulnerability and why trauma informed approaches are essential across health, social care, education and the justice system. Rather than offering simple answers, it encourages meaningful reflection on how institutions can better protect and support people. This is an important film that deserves to be seen by policymakers, professionals and the wider public alike. A compelling and timely watch that has the potential to inspire important conversations and meaningful change.”

“A beautifully crafted documentary exploring the link between childhood trauma and mental ill health. Ton Mazzone has masterfully integrated the telling of his own story in a humble, authentic way illuminated by cutting edge research and evidence. And lived experience testimonies. The film is educational, emotional and provides the impetus for systems change in every arena - education, health, social care, youth justice, work places, community, government policy and practice. Inspirational, motivational and has galvanised me to do more in my role.”
