About the film

True Believer is the film and guide I wish I had had ten years ago when I first questioned my inherited faith and politics. When I set out to make True Believer, I had stopped recognizing Jesus in the faith community that taught me who he was: a brown, colonized, indigenous man who embodied love and came to ease the suffering of the most vulnerable. Today, the movement that raised me is an overt white supremacist, nationalist cult, hellbent on inflicting pain by abducting and deporting brown and black bodies, refusing life-saving healthcare to pregnant people, and tormenting queer children and their families. What once appeared as a southern fringe group--from the federal government to the Supreme Court--now holds each of our rights, freedoms, and our Democracy in their clutches. Their long-game has been successful, but how did we get here, and do we dare have hope for the future of the United States? Now is the time for a reckoning within the white, American, evangelical church.
